Use IPF’s charity status to increase NIE donations
‘Partners in Literacy’ grant program can help
When seeking donations for Newspaper In Education programs, a common hurdle is qualifying the gift as a tax-deductible charitable contribution. The Illinois Press Foundation can help newspapers cross that hurdle through its Partners In Literacy program.
The IPF is a 501 (c)(3) corporation that can receive tax-deductible donations and offer grants back to the newspaper’s NIE program.
Here’s how it works:
The newspaper contacts potential donors and offers them the choice of sending their gift to the IPF. This wording must appear on the solicitation: The Illinois Press Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) corporation. For Internal Revenue Service reporting, no premiums, goods or services were provided in consideration of your gift, and it is fully deductible to the extent allowable by law.
A grant contribution form is available from the IPF. Please contact the IPF to request a copy of the form. Each donation check should include a completed form.
The IPF then writes a check (within 45 days) back to the newspaper minus a 3 percent administrative fee.
All donations must benefit NIE programs but may include sets of newspapers, curriculum guides, tabs or other special classroom projects for NIE.
